Hunger, food hardship, food insecurity, very low food security, poverty, supplemental poverty…So many ways to measure and understand deprivation, but which do you use when, and how? Join FRAC for a primer on what each measure means and how to use it to describe hunger or poverty. We will cover the official USDA food security measure and how it compares to the Gallup Healthways-Wellbeing survey data on food hardship. Then we will explain the differences between the official poverty measure and the supplemental poverty measure, and how both contribute to our understanding of deprivation and the critical role played by federal nutrition programs in alleviating poverty.
